I've come across this kind of thing a few times. E.g. on http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E7%8A%AC
"The character is considered a rather abstract rendition – Confucius is quoted as saying “The ancients must have had very strange looking dogs” (500 BCE)."
And similar statements elsewhere, but none of the references say where Confucius actually says this, so I'm wondering if someone just made it up? All of the "sources" given are just someone else asserting that Confucius said this in 500BC.

It's not in the Analects, so unless you know some other source of Confucius's sayings, then he didn't say it, and wasn't alleged to have said it before the creation of that gigantic fake-quote manufacturing machine known as the Internet.
